The Enchanting Beauty of Living Walls in Interior Design

In the realm of interior design, there is a growing fascination with merging the natural world with indoor spaces. Among the most captivating trends to emerge is the concept of living walls, also known as vertical gardens. These installations not only serve as striking visual focal points, but also foster a connection between humans and nature.

Embracing Biophilic Design

Biophilic design incorporates natural elements into interior spaces, and has taken the design world by storm. As our modern lifestyles pull us away from nature, the longing to incorporate organic elements has intensified. Living walls can transform any interior space or exterior patio. Different plant species, arrangements, and flowers can evoke a range of moods, from energizing vibrancy to calming tranquility.

From Michael Burke, Interior Designer:

In this Highland Beach design, we used various types of succulents and flora, including Donkey Tails, Mexican Snow Balls, and Stonecrop. Our inspiration here was our clients' love of nature and wellness, which we at KMID share. Bringing plants into a home breathes life into the space and can bring the residents a feeling of serenity and peace, reconnecting with nature.

To prepare for this installation, we researched different types of moss, succulents, and flora, the shades most commonly found in nature, then once we felt we had sufficient information, we went ahead and started experimenting with color combinations and varieties. Our client had expressed to us that they love the uniqueness of moss, and so we incorporated many shades and textures to visually express this.

Here’s a look at how we did it:

Installation of Highland Park Living Wall

We spent many hours experimenting with arrangements, securing the faux succulents to create a singular, yet unified look between the four planters. All of the plants used were faux and outdoor-rated to withstand the sun and elements, given that the homeowners would be out of state most of the year and unable to tend to these plants.

What we created truly brought a bit of the outdoors into our client’s living space.

We are incredibly proud of this design and our clients let us know that they were happily satisfied, beyond their imagination.
