KMID Selected as Sherwin-Williams Featured Designer

I was honored to be selected by Sherwin Williams as a Featured Designer. The team here was excited to learn than Sherwin-Williams selected a Highland Beach renovation that I lead to be showcased as a premier project.

As part of this honor, I was interviewed about the importance of selecting the right paint colors and sheens and how it can make an impact on your living space.

I wanted to share it here with you here on the blog:

Why is paint sheen important?

When selecting paint sheen at Kelly Marie, we always consider a few important factors, because it tells you how the paint will appear on your wall. Different sheens will interact with the light differently, giving them a shiny or matte appearance. Each sheen has applications that are most suited for different interior designed spaces. Selecting the sheen sets the stage for the type of design you are implementing. For example, a modern home may use a high gloss in certain spaces to create a clean, reflective space. Conversely, a more transitional home or farmhouse/ranch style home is best suited for a lower sheen, which will evoke a comforting feel, as it is softer on the eyes.

What impact does sheen have on space?

Paint sheen is important for Kelly Marie because it creates dimension in a space.  Combining two different sheens in a room for example, high sheen on moldings and a low sheen on the walls defines each space and pronounces the moldings.  A high gloss paint will reflect additional light, creating more shadows and in turn emphasizing depth. Juxtaposing your high sheen with flat walls in the same room, your eye will immediately move towards the accent wall with high gloss moldings which creates the focal point.

What are some common misconceptions about sheen, or what is one thing about sheen that seems to confuse most people?

There is a common misconception that you can't use flat paint in a bathroom because you can't clean it.  I consistently use Sherwin Williams Emerald or Duration in a flat or matte finish.  You can wipe this paint clean with a light hand, a soft white cloth, and mild soap and water.

What led you to select the sheen or finish in this project?

With this project in Highland Beach, Florida, I chose a satin finish on the wall moldings, cabinets, and shiplap to create a stylish and sophisticated look, not too shiny and not too dull.  This selection worked perfectly in conjunction with the natural textured stones on the back wall and throughout.    Check out this before and after of this project.
